What Is Banded Plication Surgery?
Banded plication was just such an innovative procedure that seemed to hold great promise when we first began studying it. The procedure was thought to be advantageous by combining the benefits of the adjustable gastric band and surgically shrinking the size of the stomach. The surgery would involve inserting the gastric band along the top portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch. The stomach would then be folded in upon itself just below the band and sutured to hold the folds in place, thereby reducing the overall size of the stomach. Theoretically, this would accelerate the rate of weight loss compared to gastric banding alone.
What Results can I Expect?
Despite our initial expectations, the results of banded plication have so far been disappointing with patients experiencing weight loss rates similar to those who had adjustable gastric band surgery alone. Additionally, some patients experienced complications following the procedure.
In the absence of significant benefits and factoring the greater risks involved, it is difficult to justify recommending this surgery. At this time, banded plication remains an experimental procedure and should only be performed within the context of formal study.
